Health and Safety Issues
Timber contains many types of natural toxins, which inhibit fungal attack in the tree. The following guidelines should be followed when using any timber, whether chemically treated or not.
1. LOSP (Light Organic Solvent Preservative) treated timbers should always be dried sufficiently before handling and working. As a rule, a minimum of 48 hours is required after treatment to allow the solvents time to evaporate. Timber that is wet - not dry - with preservative should not be handled: the longer it is left after treatment, the better.
2. It is advisable to use a dust extraction system when machining, cutting or sanding treated timber and the working environment should be well ventilated.
3. Dust masks, gloves, earmuffs and eye protection with side shields should be worn when machining, cutting or sanding treated timber. Contact lenses pose a special hazard; soft lenses may absord irritants and all lenses concentrate them.
4. All work clothes should be washed separately from other clothing.
5. Always wash hands before eating, smoking, drinking or using the toilet.
6. Do NOT use treated off cuts for heating or cooking fires, barbeques or spit roasts. Dispose of treated off cuts to an authorised landfill.
