Pacific Matai

PACIFIC MATAI Podocarpus

This Podocarpus is from South America and grows in the mountainous regions from Venezuela to Peru. The heartwood ranges in colour from a yellowish orange to a dark orange brown occasionally streaked with dark brown. The appearance resembles a mix of both NZ Heart Matai and NZ Heart Rimu.

Because of this resemblance, Pacific Matai is a good alternative for our dwindling Heart Rimu supply.

Unlike NZ Rimu which is becoming harder and harder to source, Pacific Matai is available in most sizes and good lengths.

The timber seasons without difficulty at low temperatures, air drying rapidly with little or no warping or twisting.

The fine properties of texture allow the timber to be planed, turned and sanded to excellent standards. The timber is very stable once kiln dry.

It will take both natural finishes and paints well.
